Cozy Cottage with Great Ambience and Food.
This is a wonderful romantic place to spend the weekend. My boyfriend and I came here twice, once in the winter and now a few weekends ago in the summer. The service is attentive and kind. They let us switch to the table that we had the first time we were there. The room is old fashioned with a roaring fireplace and cute decor.
The Foie Gras is one of the most delicious thing I have ever tasted. It is lightly sauteed, making it crispy and warm on the outside and cool and smooth on the inside. The drive from the city is worth it for this one dish.
In the wintertime the Ice Wine is absolutely heavenly. It is made from grapes that are just thawing out. It is sweet without being buttery and too saccharine.
Also, they have rooms available there. We stayed there both times and after perhaps imbibing a tad bit too much we were just a few steps outside to our room in the cottage.
Not as good as expected. My Boyfriend and I spent a lovely peaceful thanksgiving in High Falls and wanted to treat ourselves to what we thought would be the best thanksgiving dinner. This was sadly not the case. The building is wonderful with so much character, and we had a lovely table by the log fire. But the food was just ok for the price. It is supposed to be gourmet but to me it was just average. Our server was rushing about all over the place and we didn't get all that much attention. Perhaps the busy thanksgiving evening proved too much for the restaurant, it certainly seemed this way to us. We will not be returning, we felt it a little over priced for the standard of food.
New American cuisine from a centuries-old kitchen..
John Novi created Canal House in the late 1960s from the shell of a late 18th-century tavern-turned-canal-worker-eatery. The building's whitewashed stone exterior offers a rusticity that the interior matches with large fireplaces and knickknacks. Guests are locals and regular Catskills vacationers out for a special occasion. Executive Chef Novi is known as one of the country's leaders in New American cuisine. Entrees may include the likes of venison, pork tenderloin and pheasant.
