Editorial Review for Depuy Canal House – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
John Novi created Canal House in the late 1960s from the shell of a late 18th-century tavern-turned-canal-worker-eatery. The building's whitewashed stone exterior offers a rusticity that the interior matches with large fireplaces and knickknacks. Guests are locals and regular Catskills vacationers out for a special occasion. Executive Chef Novi is known as one of the country's leaders in New American cuisine. Entrees may include the likes of venison, pork tenderloin and pheasant.

this restaurant used to be the standard of the Hudson Valley. I am not sure if the bar has been raised or they have just lost pace. The restaurant setting is beautiful inside and out. The food is good, but way overpriced. Seems to me that they rely on longstanding regulars and a reputation from days gone by to keep business flowing.

Pros: wonderful ambience

Cons: average food at above average price

This is a wonderful romantic place to spend the weekend. My boyfriend and I came here twice, once in the winter and now a few weekends ago in the summer. The service is attentive and kind. They let us switch to the table that we had the first time we were there. The room is old fashioned with a roaring fireplace and cute decor. The Foie Gras is one of the most delicious thing I have ever tasted. It is lightly sauteed, making it crispy and warm on the outside and cool and smooth on the inside. The drive from the city is worth it for this one dish. In the wintertime the Ice Wine is absolutely heavenly. It is made from grapes that are just thawing out. It is sweet without being buttery and too saccharine. Also, they have rooms available there. We stayed there both times and after perhaps imbibing a tad bit too much we were just a few steps outside to our room in the cottage.

Pros: Food, Ambience

Cons: Too far away!
