Editorial Review for Cafe Tamayo – by Bryan Miller
The Scene
Housed in an 1864 structure in the center of an antique-rich village along the Hudson River, this traditional American restaurant is one of the area's most popular culinary destinations. A magnificent hand-carved antique bar and period fireplace lurk in the front room; the simply appointed main dining room is cozy, comfortable and never overly loud. The staff is charming.
The Food
Chef-owner James Tamayo turns out a reliably satisfying American menu featuring lusty entrees like succulent duck confit with red-onion marmalade and wild rice, tender pork piccata with caper-butter sauce and a fine steak au poivre. Winning starters include the sauteed mussels laced with just a touch of hot chilies and the crusty smoked salmon with potato pancakes. The exceptionally well-chosen wine list has something for all tastes, and at friendly prices.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasBefore or after dinner, stroll along Partition Street and check out the dozen or more antique shops. Most are fairly high-end, and there are relatively few bargains, but it's fun to look.

While visiting Saugerties for a wedding, I decided to check out the local scene. The village is charming & worth a trip if you're traveling up the NYSThruway. The menu at Cafe Tamayo was surprisingly innovative and to our delight, everything tasted as great as it looked! CT offers seasonal dishes, at moderate prices, with a great wine list. Service was a little slow... but the restaurant was also full and besides, this is not NYC... people are a bit more laid-back and I enjoyed taking my time. It contributes to the warm and charming atmosphere. In response to the description that there are great antique shops a few steps away - there are! Lots of fun browsing - some more affordable than others (Greenbriar Cottage is one I remember), so carve out an afternoon for lunch and shopping - you'll be glad you did!
Pros: Menu, Atmosphere, Town
Cons: "Relaxed" service, (only a con for some)

I like it a lot. I have eaten there at least one hundred times and I look forward to going back. I like seafood and they always have a good selection available. Their creme bruele is excellent. The service generally seems efficient and friendly. To me its the best restaurant in Saugerties.
Pros: food, decor, service
